The Winter’s Tours Book

Tailwater Press / 2023

144 pages

The late historian Robert W. Winter arrived in Los Angeles in 1956 to teach social history at UCLA. Six years later he joined the faculty at Occidental College, where he taught for the next 30 years. His interests were broad and included a fascination with the history of architecture in Southern California.

Winter’s Tours was the last book he wrote and remained unpublished until now. Exquisitely illustrated with Alex Vertikoff’s photography, it includes Winter’s personal recommendations of the architectural highlights Los Angeles has to offer. Some choices are well known – others surprising – a delightfully personal inventory by someone who knew and loved the area’s architectural scene better than anyone.
